What is a statically IP address and why is it needed

Static (fixed) external IP address & mdash; this is a permanent address on the Internet that can be accessed by your friends and acquaintances for remote connection.

A static address differs from a dynamic one only in that the latter can change every time you access the Internet, while the static one will be assigned to the subscriber and will not change when you access the Internet.

An IP address is called static (permanent, unchangeable) if it is assigned by the user in the device settings, or is assigned automatically when the device connects to the network and cannot be assigned to another device.

On the vastness of the world wide web, there are many services that require the user to have a static ip-address. The most common example is using a computer as a fixed IP server hardware. In order to more easily understand the specifics of using a static IP, it is worth considering an example of using a home PC as a game server, which is visited daily by thousands of users. If the address is dynamic, then it is possible to connect to the server only once, and if it is static, then numerous players will be able to visit the server many times.

Types of IP Address

In order to understand the difference in concepts between ip-addresses, it makes sense to dwell on each of them in more detail:

  • Dynamic. Each PC receives it automatically when connected to the global network for a certain time. Today, dynamic addresses are the most common, since they are given to almost all providers;
  • Static. It is specified in the settings of the network card or assigned by the provider if the user is connected to the Network for a sufficiently long period of time. If there is a disconnection of network resources, then upon reconnection, the address does not change, as happens with a dynamic analogue. The address marking remains unchanged until the user decides to change the static or permanent IP address.

Static IP Advantages

If the dynamic address changes at the next network access, the static one is assigned to one user. It does not change until the service is deactivated.

Static local IP address helps when you need it:

  • organizing your own server with a permanent address;
  • organization of remote access to video surveillance at the facility;
  • organization of remote access to a computer;
  • use of individual online services, for authorization of which it is necessary to bind to an IP address (Internet banking, cloud storages, game servers, etc.);
  • organizing a VPN connection, for example, from home to office network.
